Controversial pronouns are pronouns that generally should not be used and may also be considered directly offensive.

However, some of these pronouns are not inherently harmful, and their negative connotations depend on the intent of the user.

An example of this is the set dreamself (dream team version), as it was created not only by an anti-neopronoun "troll" to discredit the community, but is based on a real person - popular Minecraft Youtuber DreamWasTaken. While not only being incredibly invasive and disrespectful to Dream himself, the pronouns are also deeply mocking of neopronoun users. However, dreamself pronouns are not inherently controversial when used as a nounself pronoun set.

Things that make a pronoun or pronoun set particularly controversial may be one or more of the following:

  • It mocks something/someone, such as mocking neurodivergent individuals or "cringe culture"
  • It glorifies a serious or traumatic event, such as a genocide or war
  • It worships or over-glorifies a person or celebrity, typically living, or a controversial historic figure (such as Christopher Columbus)
  • It oversexualizes something/someone without their consent
  • It excessively advertises something/someone, though this is a little harder to distinguish.
